    Mission Files Viewer

Post by bupar on Mon Apr 17, 2017 5:19 am

I have found the text files for missions rather difficult to read in a text editor. Here is an utility attempting to:

    1. tabulate the info in these files where appropriate
    2. break up the text messages line to make them more readable
    3. comments are stripped to keep the tables clean
    4. provide an easy to use drag and drop interface

There is no additional capability such as editing or search.

    Target audience:

    1. users who like to know more about the setting of the missions without necessarily going into Mission Editing.
    2. Modders who like to quickly review the mission files for debugging.

There are still a few hung-ups where lines are not tabulated or displayed. The routine assume, e.g., each record is in a single line without line breaks (CR/LF). Most mission files are, fortunately, formatted correctly for this.

I am not sure if anyone will find this useful. I wrote this to help me understand the way the missions work and I certainly hope my effort could be of use by others.

    How to use:
No installation necessary other than extract the files from the archive.
Keep the two files in one folder.
I suggest opening the folder in its own window and drag and drop the missions files on the .bat file.
New window(s) will open to display the reformatted file contents.
The original files will not be altered. Just make sure you do not move the files by mistake when you drag-and-drop.

I found this most useful for the .engcfg files under
    Steel Fury - Kharkov 1942 - STA1.2\data\k42\loc_rus\levels\LEVELS\camp
    and .engscr files under
    Steel Fury - Kharkov 1942 - STA1.2\data\k42\loc_rus\levels\LEVELS\SCRIPTS
but most other text based files works.

    Programming notes:
The main work is done by the handler.hta, which is an HTML application written in Vbscript.
HTML applications do not accept drag-and-drop. The drag_drop_mission_files_here.bat file provide the drag-and-drop interface. Do not change the name of handler.hta. This name is hard coded into the batch file.

Both files can be opened, examined and changed with any text editor.

The MD5 checksum for the current version of handler.hta is:

Interesting idea but no plan at the moment due to the added complexity required. Just don't have the time in the foreseeable future.
